Problems connecting to servers

Hi,

In the last couple of days I've found it impossible to connect to any of the 1234 servers, and also the DEUS match server. In masterserver i can see the number of players, but not the ping (it just says N/A).

Any ideas on whats wrong?

deus match server is on the 1234 box

to the best of my knowledge:

1234's servers are currently being used as part of a ddos exploit within the ut2k3 engine (essentially, the server is used to ping flood another box, but im sure samy'll explain it better than me). and the iptables are filling up faster than a vote for a mute surge button on the forums.

you should be able to join them, although it may take a long time during connection (the black screen before maploading bit)

Nope, I tried just leaving it to connect, but it came up with a Connection Failed message

that is when ther server is completely down. everybody that tries to connect cant connect them. u see the players when u open favorites anyway. its strange but after a few minutes/hours it should work again.

Yeah, lots of people had that problem: Replace your user.ini with defuse.ini (worked for Relik)

as for the 1234 server, all i know is that the ports where changed *which would change in UT anyway* so the only thing i can suggest is typing it in, eg open 195.157.35.90:7977 etc

We had to change the port numbers of all the UT2k3 servers we run from the default port (7777). This was because some berk had released an exploit which used UT2k3 servers to amplify traffic (DDOS) to a victim. They did this by sending hundreds of connections requests per second to game servers with faked source IPs. The poor guy whose on the faked IP will then get inudated with game servers trying to send responses to it. So even though the servers were not a target (but inadvertently taking part) of the DDOS, having to process hundreds of connections requests per second causes a lot of lag.

It probably didnt help that the UT2k3 Master server has been playing up recently - which means that you may not have got a complete list of servers in the in-game browser, with the updated port numbers.

In anycase - if you have any of our servers in your favourites - just open up your .ini file and replace 7777 with 7977 for our servers.

Sorry.. we had to make the changes quickly, so not much time to let people know.

Hmmmm, I've checked my ini file, and it already has 7977 for your servers....curious

try deleting all your cached passworded servers from your ut2003.ini - worked for me :)

As if by magic, the problem disappeared :)
