They went in because they saw it as a good opportunity to secure Middle East oil reserves, as well as establishing a Middle East government favourable to the US (the usual response, I know).
The reason they're still there is because they have the forlorn hope they can get Iraq into a state that will allow them to withdraw without it looking like a defeat. Of course they fully expect the country to disintegrate as soon as they leave but they'll simply blame the Iraqi government/forces.
All IMO of course.
