Hello people, I'm stuck at this level for almost 2 weeks and didn't make any progress, does the exact position of the pins matter or just the countrie than they are?

This level is making me regret ever entering that damn level 1 door, that's for sure. Anyone around who I can pm to see if I'm on the right track? I also want to see if I can clarify something, and I'll try to ask that here in a way that keeps the content vague. There's lots of talk in this thread about the background being important, but no one's really clarified which background, if that makes sense. Do both somehow matter? They just seem so different that connecting the two of them as well as the map seems almost laughably impossible. But anyway, I'm working through my thoughts and would love some clarification that I'm (hopefully) going down the correct path. Thanks!
