It's stupid to think about whether or not these people deserved it (which is stupid, because they had done nothing to the people hijacking the planes, nor to any of the people organising the entire attack), the Taliban, or whoever were responsible (didn't Osama, the Taliban's leader, say: "I did not do it, but I am happy for it having happened either way"?), just saw generalised Americans, and hate grew towards them to the simple fact that America is to them the personification (on a nationwide scale, but I can't find a better word) of all that is western, and thus evil.
Why? It doesn't matter why, people can think anything they want, and I'm sure that anything u can and can't imagine, has been in the head of some random psycho some time.
Just that situations like in Afghanistan, where a large number of the population can not read, and is desperate in bad circumstances ready to blame anyone but theirselves, they are easily misguided when one of them stands up and has a certain amount of power.
In a country like afghanistan, power such as that is easily reached.
If you have their trust (which is not hard if you are from Afghanistan and are a normal man), and have the ability to read, you can tell them anything you want, simply by saying it's in the Koran or whatever.
I'm just saying that, anyone can have this power, and the chance of it being someone with strange ideas to divert their rage to whoever they want, is pretty big.
The terrorist wasn't about the individuals, it was about striking America, punishing the western society.
It could have been any over-powered, succesfull country, hell it could have been a person, a village, a minority OR majority by whatever different thing they have. The problem is that whenever a nation or people is in trouble, they tend to want to blame someone.
What happened is that someone who could read stood up, and made people believe his ideas, and a whole population started to intensely hate America/the Western world.
I don't have to tell you where that went /o\ (Don't misunderstand me, I do feel sorry for what has happened)
edit: a perfect example for this: a nation in trouble blaming a succesful minority because of the major influence of one charismatic leader: Hitler and the national start of what later became WW2
