Well, as I see it docks have a lot of pros:
It looks better,
skips the Zen's (pre-)amp,
can drive better headphones/speakers, and you can plug it in to the same amp that holds your other audio-equipment.

So docks are all nice in theory, but in the end, the pre-amp shouldn't be much of a problem, and a good soundcard + headphones as well as a way to play your Zen's files on your computer (= USB/Firewire cord and supporting software) should work do about the same job. This is cheaper, and has almost the same result unless - of course - you want to play it on an audiophile set-up (and not just connect it through the headphone so actually skipping the pre-amp...does the Zen have a line-out?).

For audiophile playback though..why would you use a portable mp3-player anyway? :) Surely you've either got the original CDs or burnt a back-up of your downloaded files (iTunes store etc.)?

i don't have an other amp to plug it into though unfortunately. and my speakers i have are the wire that fit into the clamps..they dont have an input thing for the dock to plug into.
yeah i have my CDs backed up and all. but i dont wanna listen to them in my computer room.

i want to add that the warranty of apple sucks... 1 year? great :S

my ipod U2 ed. had some strange error a few weeks ago. i brought it back to the shop and the warranty was over. i thought a warranty of 2 years is regulated by law here in germany or even europe (i don't know tbh) yet it was only 2 years 'Gewährleistung' (if i look that word up it says warranty again, gg) which means in order that apple replaces/repairs ipod for free after 1 year the error/defect/whatever that has occured had to be there from the start. ye, like that helps after a year...

plus the new ipods don't come with firewire support nor a power supply so you have to charge it with your computer all the time if you don't want to spend money on it. at least as far as i know (my brother got an ipod nano)...

My warranty runs out in 1.5 month. Let's hope I find the receipt before that deadline \o/

(there's a Nano in your family? ¬_¬)

Fee, you can use your old charger if you still have it :o

It's funny when people buy one for too much money (imo), and I just still have the same AC-charger from my old mini :D (before it got thrown into the washing machine, yes).
