Then are there any ways you are aware of that allow for a "tactical cannon" that would not have an adverse effect on standard gameplay?
I would have thought the change would be no more awkward than the staying at 75% speed thing after release a ball at low power.
Also... another quick thing (as I said.. very busy.. but making a lot of quick checks now and then) Is it possible to make the power of ball charge more like a graph defined by square root(x) rather than linear? (I'm assuming its a linear power charge right now, that or defined by x^2)
I feel a root charge would be best, because it would allow viable shots sooner in the charge, and it could reach high power early, and sort of plateau towards the end. It woulld change the offense/keeper battle from a duel of timing to a duel of wits. I think having the shot being viable earlier in the charge will open up a lot of shooting possibilities. Defenders who want to shake will have to hit at the beginning of the charge, or risk the guy shooting before the hit him. And if they hit at the beginning of the charge, then the shooter can grit his teeth and try to get it off right before it OCs. In that situation, the keeper would also be able to used a time strategy. I don't think it would shatter anything, but it would make the defense and the keeper work closer together (although they are already very close), it would add some real harcore tactics to shake/anti-shake, and it would open up some possibilities for the offense.
If you want to allow for extra power for an end charge, you can either raise the end-part of the graph that defines the charge power, or you can make it shaped like a x^3 chart shifted up and to the right, so that it starts rising quickly, plateaus in the middle, and then rises up again at the end. (unless that's how it is already, in which case call me an idiot.)
I can show visuals of the graphs later, but I hope the descriptions are clear enough. Gah! wasted too much time. c-ya

"Then are there any ways you are aware of that allow for a "tactical cannon" that would not have an adverse effect on standard gameplay? "
there are sooo many non standard gameplay things

just watch cy13 playing
all the stuff is somewhat not obvious, but shows how much depth this game has, its not like "I can pass, shoot and volley, thats all"
more shoot power doesn't sound good, atm it takes some good skill to score from 16-20 meters, that would just make it too easy

Nonono.. I'm not suggesting more shot power. I am suggest the same max shot power, and this time, even the same minimum. What I am suggesting, is this:
Right now, a half charged shot will go so many meters per second. With what I am suggesting, The half charge shot would be going faster than it is now.. maybe 2.5-5 meters per second faster. The minimum shot power, and the maximum would be the same. The difference lies in the "viable charge time" for the shot. Instead of being only able to shoot in the last 1/4 of the charge bar and make it, you can shoot in the last 1/2 of the charge bar and possibly make it. It doesn't even mean people would just let shots off at 1/2. What it allows for is people to better maneuver around shakes, and defenders to work harder to use the shake to defend. A perfectly timed shake would still screw the shooter, but a slightly mistimed shake could allow a good shooter to get the shot off, either before the shake or at the last second.
I'll say it agian, it wouldn't change the beginning or the end... give me a few minutes.. I'll post a picture.

X-axis = Charge time. y-axis = shot power
All I'm saying is that if shot power currently defined more similarly to the blue... then try defining it by the red. I think it would offer a beneficial gameplay change. I think the current shake time/power is perfectly suited for such a system.

this was my very first charge idea too
but it would make it too hard for no reason, i like it the current way
and it would be too inaccurate
...and all those people who are used to the current value would be killing me for it

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning... I could see how the points could be made... but maybe you could elaborate on how you're getting to your conclusion.
As I see it, it wouldn't make it that hard. I'll address each probplem presented in order.
it would make it too hard for no reason: I don't believe it would make it hard. It would make calibrating short lobs to teamates and short lobs against walls a little harder, but the ablity to get the set quickly would make it easier as well. Not to mention you can use right click to set people. There are only a few other reasons for an under-charged shot, most of which could still be accomplished with a very short charge, before it starts scaling. Most people don't shoot until it reaches an "effective" power, this simply accelerates the speed of reaching that "effective" power, and prolongs the amount of time you can use it. This would make it easier to get a good shot off.
I like it the current way: I don't think I can actually refute that.
It would be too inaccurate: It would take a slight recalibration of the thought process at the beginning of the charge, something that could be learned very quickly. This could be aided by a charge sound that swings up very quickly and then kind of levels off. The inaccuracy comes in very quick sets, but those can be slightly off, and still work. Not to mention that the players who do that stuff are quite smart, and would adapt to teh charge time quickly. It would increase accuracy overall though. There would be more ways players could juke defenders with shot, allowing for more quality shots on goal.
All those people who are used to the current value would be killing me for it: Well.. first.. I wouldn't kill you. So that's one. I would just like to see it tried. You said it was your first change idea... Its probably not that bad of an idea. Could we possibly try it out in one playstyle2 patch? Even just like a beta playstyle2 patch? I think it at least merits a try.

i admire how you can fill one by saying pretty much nothing, you do it all the time
well, ask people if they like it, then we can do it for playstyle 2...but I'm sure they wouldnt like it once they've tried it

Oh, also, most people currently only shoot at high charge shots. towards the end of the graph, both ways of defining charge power have very similar powers. Most people probably wouldn't notice the change. People who do quick shots with shot instead of pass would probably appreciate it. It would beef up their shots a little. The only people who would imediately notice a change (it might be bad or it might be good) are people who do medium powered shots, for sets, jukes, or just because they want to. Those people could probably easily learn to time it sooner, Not to mention it would be to their benefit to be able to execute those moves quicker, with an even shorter charge times.
Other people would notice the change as they realize they can burn the defenders by firing sooner, then the defenders will realize they have to hit sooner, and the people will realize they can hold the ball and get the last second shot off. Then the defenders will adapt, and it should evolve into a duel of wits, where the people are suqaring off to guess what kind of charge the offense is going to do, and how the defense will react.

"i admire how you can fill one by saying pretty much nothing, you do it all the time " you lost me. Is that a compliment or an insult? I'm not sure... it -sounds- like a good thing... but I'm not sure.
