What about db-Gym? It's a cube. It looks good. It plays well. It's not too big. Add some sqeaky shoe noises when you run (like in Virtua Tennis), update it for v1.8 and you have a damn fine map.

I don't care for GreenBaize but I don't think the balls are the problem. It's the people who spend all their time jumping around on the stools that make it shit to play. And that the ball resets all the frigging time...

i like gym, it just has this cheap look to it
reminds me of half life or so (no, hl does not look good!)
that would be several cheap textures, bland lighting, missing trim here and there
and lots of small stuff, but this sums up

The only reason you think it looks cheap is because it's not up to YOUR map standard.

a good map has to be up to TODAY's standard

something like "amazing for a n00b mapper" doesn't a mean a shit, got that?

DavidM not too many people can make maps that share the level of quality yours do. Come on, cut these mappers some slack.

imo gym is up to the standards of the rest of the db map pack... maybe the lighting could be a little my dynamtic but i don't know if you are ever been in a real gym but then mostly have that bland look to them. Just get rid of the walk way (or block it off some how) so that ppl can't walk along it... the same thing should be done for lego fan.

I don't think many DB maps look good by today's standards. The grass texture on Cube isn't great, nor the bricked walls. Load up a UT2K3 DM map and you'll realise that most official DB maps (with maybe November being the only exception) aren't eye-candy and don't show off the UT2K3 engine. Of course a cube based map can't use many flashy effects, but the resolution of the textures could easily be improved. But looks aren't everything though, it's how it the map plays at the end of the day which is most important...

Gym has an annoying 'bug' or design, where someone can shoot the ball up to the stand and it stays there.
Or people can boost up there ... and stay there.
One player doing this ruins the game - and everyone leaves.
This has been my experience every time gym has been played.

And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with pillars in maps.
Orginal tribun was perfect. The pillars add a block between you and opponent which equals 'variety'. Form your own tactics to use the pillars. Throw in that you can jump off the pillars to create super height jump shots... = good.
New tribun is too large though. Completely lost popularity here in Aus.

Replacement map.. anibus? has taken over all tribus playtime. Its the one with the two pillar rows and the static mesh statues behind goals. Map is fun to play.
It is not perfect. The penalty box is raised in n00b mapping style (what I do), because the mapper used a cube as the penalty zone, not a surface.
But is fun. Pillars add variety. You use the pillar to create space.
There is still backwall space. Size is nice etc.

Pillars are good - don't dis the pillar!

Here is Aus - we want maps that are 'in-between' small cube and cube.
Currently every map appears to be cube sized... or changed to cube size. This is too big and makes for slow boring gameplay, especially on publics. We want fast gameplay - hence sprint on ;) - that ain't always as spammy as smallcube.

Mid-sized maps are the most popular here - and we have to look to customs for that.

I don't put these maps in the pack because they are good for a n00b mappers first effort, I put them in because they are great maps. They may not be up to your standards, but they still are enjoyable. That is what this DB Ownage Map Pack is all about.
