I'm certainly not happy about needing so many buttons, but it can certainly still done easily. Other games have much more stuff.
The most comfortable way certainly is the mouse with the leet wheel, but no problem otherwise.

It would be easy enough to reduce the button count.

Cripplishness like only one banana button with the mouse movement determining the banana direction, but it would be ruining it all.

Of course it would.
Is losing the ability to aim for the last, what, 200ms really so bad?
Hell, you could have it on the movement keys if you wanted, retaining the ability to aim. Hold curve button down, player carries on moving in the last direction they were travelling, next direction press sets the curve. Again, we're only talking a few milliseconds here.
There are a number of ways it could be done.

At the very least u cud give the option of spin toggling (toggle a spin(s) always on) as well as the 2 second cancel option.
The point is, it is needlessly complicated for some people (even though it is fine for others)
DB is like a strategy which doesn't allow u to play with just the mouse, but forces you to learn every hotkey comination first.
Rather than the spins being something that you pick up as you play the game, they are now mandatory.
ps. isn't it ironic that now people are "scared away" by 'Spin Only' as opposed to the killed off VO?

it's pretty much david's fault
when the new sounds kicked in the game got screwed up, this version was meant to kill VO play, like bouncing the ball under you(lol i could still do that even in 2.4k)
david didnt like the fact ppl would prefer playing Volley Only over regular DB and that sucked cuz he sucked in VO so he needed ppl to play with him rather then being alone in his server
the curve thing also screwed it up, it caused an unfair advantage for people that have 8way wheel mouse, and ppl that werent going to buy a new mouse were pretty much screwed.
also the big changes in gameplay cost the community a lot of players, especially if u introduce a new patch with altered gameplay every 2 weeks
all and all I would like to say the developers killed DB, but to be honest it was al davids doing
p.s. i quit DB over a year after playing from v1.9 (I played about 2-3 years)
It was dead waaaaaay before everything you said there.

NA DB died because 2.4 didn't take on in that community as well as it did in euroland. Then some tried to go back to 2.3, which split an already dwindling population before there simply weren't enough interested parties to form the critical mass required to play regularly. I believe the last mixer was sometime back in February
