Worst thing that happened to my iPod was my grandmother (accidentally?) throwing it in the washing machine.

And no, you don't need a docking thing or anything :o this stuff is expensive enough without it ;p

I have it plugged into my computer whenever I'm at home with the USB cord so I can play my music through iTunes, and I just take it out whenever I take it with me.

Anyway, if you're not going to be fussy about lossless etc., I have to admit the Zen is a great option..the iPod used to (seem to :D) be superiour from reviews etc., but since the Zen Xtra (which has been discontinued I guess) they've been kind of on the same line.
As I said, the only main difference I see here is lossless support, which could be 'easily' fixed if there were some new (third-party) firmware.

What I do suggest though, regardless of what you're buying: please buy new headphones.

Most people hardly know how music can sound because they're used to those shitty standard headphones you get with your audio-players.

Looking for suggestions on cheap but worthwile replacements, I found this page, which should be perfect for you:
http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-appli ... eadphones/

Seriously..I would worry more about that than about choosing between a Zen and an iPod :D

I have a zen and an ipod, aside from them looking different they sound exactly the same, its all down to personal preference in the end.

I'm going to send my Ipod back to Apple to get it fixed. Battery problem. Now all I want is a portable record player :)

Rockbox is already out for the X5, still very early alpha, but it's there :o

I'm gonna get this

That way i can save a couple hundred $ and just hook my speakers directly into it.

^What he said^

Sure it will play music (and doom - albeit with no sound) but the battery life is atrocious.
