Does she love her electrolysis machine (and lost all her hair while "loving" her machine)?

Is it significant that she's female? Or would the riddle work with a man too?

Hahaha, no...

YES!

While it could theoretically have happened to a man, it's incredibly unlikely. Given the circumstances (as this is an actual historical event) I'm gonna say YES to the first question, and for the second question, no, probably not.

Was the woman already married and fell in love with another man? Then, as a punishment, her husband cut off all her hair so that the other guy wouldn't love her anymore?
(Not that we know the other guy actually loved her back..)

Is her falling in love directly related to her loss of hair?

No. But that's a very good guess.

Well, depends on how "direct" we're talking. If she hadn't fallen in love, she wouldn't have lost her hair. Alternatively, if she had fallen in love under different circumstances, she probably wouldn't have lost it then, either.

Note the major hint: This really happened, somewhere, sometime...

Was the hair loss self inflicted?

She fell in love with a guy who was alergic to her hair, so she cut it all off for him...
Teehee, my theories are getting more and more outlandish ;)

Haha, that's just the kind of thinking that'll solve this puzzle. But no, not quite. ;)

She fell in love a guy (or girl perhaps) in a burning building, and rushed in to save him (or her). As a result all her hair was singed off.

Hmmm, doesn't quite fit the punishment theory. Perhaps I'd better ask some questions...

Did she fall in love with a man?
Was the hair loss punishment inflicted by the person she fell in love with?
Was the hair loss punishment inflicted because she fell in love with someone?

For a yes/no question - was hair loss the full extent of her punishment? Or was it part of a bigger punushment?
