notpron for non-English fluent people

Post by Commuto »

Hello, I'm just starting notpron (completed up to level 7 so far...), and it is quite GREAT! :p
However my fun gets more or less spoiled because of a terrible fear I have : how possible is notpron for non-english people?
I noticed thanks to this forum that the author is German, that tends to reassure me.
However I'd get even better relief if you could assure me NOTHING is related to language/cultural knowledge. ::Pfffff::

And then I could enjoy it fully! Thanks! \o/

We've had several non english speaking people complete notpron.

Anyone willing to learn will complete it.

to learn anything, Commuto. Insights and research are your best tools here. Language is just one more "riddle"

I often thought throughout the game, I couldn't imagine doing it without a fair sense of english. Like for some levels how would u know u reached a word when you've never heard or seen that word before?
Those people who have finished it who aren't fluent in english, my hats off to them.

no real language needed here. just looking up a single word here and there. but that should be it.

I started notpron in january 2005. I registered here by march-april (i don't remember exactly) because i was really stuck on one level and i asked for help. I only used this forum to read the threads, but sometimes understand them was very difficult, so i tried to post. I'm Spanish, and I never wrote in English before, so that first post was really hard.

Since that first post, i've finished notpron (positives, negatives and greek ones... and found a lot of greek-temp-ends! :p ), i've finished other riddles and i've found a lot of friends here (hi Ollie!). I've sent a lot of PMs here and in other forums, and thanks to this, more or less, i can write fluently (with a lot of typos and hard to understand for you, sure!). I've improved a lot my English and many other skills, and now i have a huge list of online translators :)

Don't leave. Notpron isn't unfair at all for non-english riddlers. You'll learn a lot, really!
Good luck! :p

My hats off too to the non-english-speaking who complete notpron. They're already ahead of me!:p

I do remember one level that would have been quite difficult without one piece of (what I think is) "cultural" knowledge.

No worries - I've completed NotPron and am for the Netherlands (and our native language here is Dutch).

I think the linguistical riddles are harder for non-English players. My tip; say the words out loud and listen to what you say (maybe even record it and play back).

I never forget the amounts of 'rum' I said before I got that one. ;)

This is why someone made our forever friend THE DICTIONARY!

If you don't know a word, get to know it's meaning...as Snake said, it just adds to the riddle.

NotPron is all about knowledge and a nice, warm, clean and calm brain. (Mine is none of these)

My English wasn't very good before I started notpron. But using this forum, searching for infos on the web in English and of course looking up words in the dictionary made my (written) English much better :) (my spoken English is still a catastrophe  )
