Nicky it can go either way. It all just has to be done in a modular fashion according to order of operations. If you were to append further functions to your current operation you'd find that encapsulating the 5 with the exponent within the parenthesis would be a bit limiting when you get into the more complex statements. This way you only focus on one term and its immediate functions.
I take it these exponents have some other function in this riddle, though

It's just notpron maths I hate. Because I usually ended up doing it wrong;)

Maybe my choise of arts over math is related to the fact that in high school math class had almost no girls and in art class it was almost all girls... Hmm...
