Boo to these lateral thinking puzzles
Here are a couple riddles I jacked from a different forum. Let me know if these are repeats and I'll substitute different ones instead.
1. A man works for you and must be paid in gold. His salary is one bar of gold per week, but he must be paid daily. Devise a method of payment that does not involve cutting any gold bar more than twice. You must use all the gold (so cutting off 1/7 and 1/7 from each bar and discarding the rest is not an option).
2. You are part of a military company that has been captured by the enemy. The enemy leader tells you that in 30 minutes you will be lined up in single file, and upon each of your heads will be placed a hat, either black or white, completely at random. You may look ahead of you and see the color of all hats, but you may not look behind you and you cannot see your own hat.
When all hats are placed, an enemy soldier will start from the back of the line and ask which color hat the last person is wearing. If he answers correctly, he is freed. If he answers incorrectly, he is shot. The enemy soldier will then move up the line one by one asking the same question with the same consequences. Using the 30 minutes allotted to you and your men to discuss your peril, devise a plan that will maximize the number of soldiers in your company who survive.
