Ok math noobs:

-5^2 = -25
(-5)^2 = 25

With exponents they are applied first to the combining term, any any extra term-modifiers such as a negative-sign is done second. In the first one, the attached unit is 5, but in the second one, it's showing that it's negative 5 being attached. Eh that made no sense. Eff it.
