IMHO this is really the weirdest topic in the forum... and that's really a compliment!

According to Microsoft, the keys on your keyboard are read as "bits" the shift keys, either left, or right, change the bit pattern, that is why you get capital letters, or the symbols above the numbers, etc..
I will leave out the 4 page mathematical formula about this, but basically, and mathematically, when BOTH shifts are pressed, they will cancel out some of these bits to "read" as 0. This is because the left shift key changes the bit rate to the left, and the right to the right. if the math formula produces an x=1 you get the key, if it produces x=2 you get the secondary key (e.g. a capital letter, or symbol, etc.) if x=0 you get nothing, hence the "missing" keys.
