American Football isn't filled with rules. By complicated I mean how hard it is to play the sports, not because of rules. There aren't that many rules in the NFL either, NBA has billions of pointless rules.

Football (soccer) is all about game flow and constantly readjusting tactics to fit with what the opposition are doing - the skill comes in playing as a team to find space and in technique to exploit situations creatively. The low scoring aspect is great because it means that even allegedly poor teams have a chance of beating the big guns.
Football (american) is much less based on individual decisions - the coaches (offensive/defensive) have a lot more influence over what the players do. That's not to say there's no individual skills involved at all, of course there is. The positions in american football tend to be a lot more defined as well - quarterbacks train day in day out to get that killer pass. In that sense soccer is more of an all-around sport but never quite reaches the individual highs of american football.
Personally, I like watching both, they appeal to me in different ways
. Although I must admit I don't claim to be an authority on either. 'tis fun to watch two teams battle it out though.
Oh, and the one thing I dislike about american football is the amount it's controlled by the TV companies. I'd much rather watch a game and listen to analysis than be bombarded with adverts.
