Models - what do you want to see
I glad to see the look of the models is going in a new direction but I'm concerned about the vision. I'm hoping a discussion from the community on how they envision the future look of deathball could be, would supply team Vortex with ideas that might expand their own vision of what deathball could and will look like.
I think it's important to have different classes of models. It would be great if future versions of deathball always had the option of adding additional classes of models. I'd like to see some customizations that are specific to the class and model. I'd also love to see stadium maps based of off character classes.
I would like to see a class that has light amour in a sci-fi look. Thinking along the lines of UT2004's Sapphire and Satin would look good. Take a similar model and deathball customizations to change the color of the amour, maybe add some spiked shoulder amour, change hair style and glasses - and you got a lot of different cool looks.
However, I would also like to see a class that looks like world gone bad, future street warriors. Along the lines of UT2004's Hellions. Some rough looking characters in more of a black leather look. Have the customization of glasses, hair style and armor fit the look.
My concerns is that deathball is trying to be a sport that has what currents sports have, uniforms. This limits the characters looks and thus the entire mod. I don't see the hellions, or some future military type look, or some alien type look, being clad in uniforms.
Just as the current models fit well in maps like Cube and November, I would like to see maps that fit different classes of characters. An urban, darker stadium that looks like the hellion's home. Change the crowd animation in cube to match the hellion look. Change cubes goal static mesh to look more futuristic and fitting.
The drawback with different classes is it degrades a team look with everyone using different characters. If instead of uniforms with names and numbers, deathball added a way to put clan tags and/or armor on characters, you might get a more uniform and fitting look in league games. Done well, and clans might be enticed to all play with the same class and or amour style. League games where one clan has a hellion look batting another clan with a sci-fi look would be neat. Along with that, a number of cube style maps themed for different deathball characters would also be interesting.

Shev just proved again why he shouldn't be on this forum. :p
All the ideas Twig mentioned sound cool, I dunno how much time and effort that would mean though, might be too much I fear.
On your uniform-issue, yeh, I would rather see the look of the characters go in a different direction. Diversity is good and the ability to add your own clantag somewhere on your character would be sweet.
Looking forward to see those sketches

one very important point
deathball had a very talented 3d artist, he was bound by a lack of creative freedom and what came out was a set of models that were generally unaccepted
once more, deathball have a very talented 3d artist. all i ask is to give him room to do what he needs to do. if he starts being creative, then it will give the models the character they need for people to be able to have a player model that suits them.

I saw this before and thought that'd be pretty pwn. its sorta like the unreal ones. take away the shot gun and gun of course. throw some numbers on their backs. and its almost a future football feel.
Tho personally. the ammount of death in deathball. I've always imaged this kinda sport being played by Robots then real people. but then there wouldn't be much blood

edit:
but also, see the head is still open to be modified and such. so basicly i just liked the body armor style.
With character classes you can be more creative and always expanding with new stuff in each deathball version. It allows for countless possibilities, looks and directions.
Take Inphidel's pic, use the amour style as a character class theme and you have more room for different other looks. Use the armor as a uniform with numbers and names, and that limits all characters to uniforms with names and numbers. Some looks just wouldn't fit with numbers and names.
However, take the armor in Inphidels pic and put a clan tag on it, and that wouldn't limit other possibilities. You alway design clan tags to fit a specific model.
Names and number would be a neat feature but, I'd rather lose that for more creative and different looks.

Oh guys, just let Brett do something. I told him that I would the style of the models totally up to him. He'll get us something on the weekend (it's his 34th birthday today)
ps: I didn't read anything in the thread

I'd like to see the player models be floating orbs, with a silvery shine to them. There could be arrows on the sides of them to see what direction they were facing. My idea pwns.
Edit: Something like the Cyberdemon from Doom3 (although not so big) would fit DeathBall perfectly. Its rocket-launcher arm could be the ball launcher. This idea also pwns, though sadly not as much as my original.
Edit2: I know you got a 3D artist, but would it be possible to make the characters 2D sprites? I think that would rock.
