Because with the right timing, the ball of the altfire shot will come right below your feet, and you can volley it into the goal.
On other jump counts it's not working so well...

I still don't understand what hitting a pass on the 3rd jump results in something different than hitting on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th jump.

I guess I still don't understand and I read the Q&A on the deathball news page.

Help me out.

First of all the only reason the move was possible was because of a BUG. The pass algorithm is designed to lead the target, so if you maintain your current speed, the ball will hit you.

However, originally, it didn't compensate for gravity affecting falling players. Thus, it was necessary for it to ignore any velocity of the player parallel to gravity. Consequently, if you are jumping, the ball is aimed for where you are currently, as far as height is concerned.

You build up maximum pre-last jump velocity on the 3rd jump. If you jump again, the ball will likely reach its "destination" below you. You will continue to fall and easily be able to volley the bowl. After 1 or 2 jumps, you have less upward velocity (that's just how multi-jump works :p), assuming you jump again before reaching the appex.

Anyhow, the bug has now been fixed (well, algorithm extended) and velocity parallel to gravity is considered, as well as falling physics. So now it will reach your back. Likely it will not be possible to gain enough unpredicted velocity from additional jumps to rise above the ball, but who knows...

well as long as you can still lock a pass to a team mate no matter what jump he is on, i'll be happy

I agree with DavidM that the 3rd jump pass is whored. Go on any public server and if you are near the enemy penalty area, people only pass to you when you are jumping. :/

But Inphidel is also right. To remove the ability to lock on to someone because they have jumped three times is kind dumb.

this would never be done....
it would screw up other things. we figured out a way that ONLY screws up this move.

you can volley any ball that is in front of you. just altfire wont get there, it will hit YOU. but you can still volley altfire from 90° or less

You can still lock onto them, but now they will catch it on thier 4th jump instead of it being in a vollyable position for them. I think this change is great - 2nd fire pass does a lot of work for you, working out the perfect angle and speed for your pass to be perfect. With primary fire, you and your skill have to decide the angle and the speed of the ball - So i think this change is Ace :p

Good work Mr. M

overon, hitting a 1st 2nd and 4th jump volley = poo

1st jump is just i dont even think u can volley

2nd jump ull be hitting the ground and it will trickle over the line

4th jump is just impossible to get it low enough on target

and i dont think u understand by this being a behind volley annoyancy.

and btw it aint a bug O_O its just people are skilled enough to jump for backwards and lean to the left/right before hitting the behind volley, and personally i think its a good skill to know how to hit them, just like its a good skill to know how to noobcannon/dodgeback save/and bounce on floor volley goal.
