I reckon Unreal TV will work really well with DB, so you could try broadcasting some games between decent teams and see what kind of reception you get - imo DB is more suited to being a spectator sport than any of the normal UT game modes, simpley because it's, err, well, more of a sport :)

I wouldn't get rid of custom map servers, just hope that the server admin puts -custom maps- on the name...

pugs suck.. join a pub. all the time and bitching i've seen its dumb. '3 more for pug! COME ON! COME ON!' those 7 people could have already joined a server and pubbed and people would have joined, maybe some n00b seeing a server runnnig lowcube (what map is that? :joins:)

NA needs a non vote pub server running the basic non VO maps. someone work your magic :)

inhidel.. public gaming aloen doesnt have the community feel that pickups have.

aside from having good NA non vo servers with ppl in it.. there has to be a better flow of information to invite people to the proper irc channels to join the community.

Some people dont like playing pubs because a lot of the pub players are arrogant piles of shit who think they are good at db. Sometimes you need a game with people who have a concept of themselves, and where everyone plays well. Me playing in a game where most of the people whiff every set, and the other half holds right click and does nothing else = a complete waste of time. As much as I might bitch at someone for killing a pug, its still 3000x better than any fun I might have in a pub.

The only really popular NA server is twigs which is VO. I ping about 115-120 on that server so it's pretty hard to play VO and when it's 5 on 5 in those small maps it's just too spammy. Not to mention most goals are from lucky bounces or self volleys off the wall. Granted i have had fun in twigs when there's less players in, the majority of times it's pretty full and spammy and so that's why i don't play it more often.

If there was a popular server like twigs that was just regular play with bigger maps i'd probably play in it a decent amount. We do have foomans server but the problem is getting it full. (btw i'd like to see either foo's or another regular server have just a few nice regular maps in a rotation instead of utvote... also foo's goal limit should be upped over 10 :)) I'm just not patient enough anymore to try to constantly get the server going.

So instead i choose to either scrim or pug. There is a huge difference in the feel of these games compared to pubs and lots of people notice that once you start playing this style that it's hard to go back to the pub style game. Whether that's good or bad it happened and it's most likely here to stay.

Don't get me wrong though i'd still play regular pubs if we had a populated one, just not sure how that's gonna happen.

I am making these changes to my server:

12 players
2 specs
no goal limit
20 minute games
ut2vote gone
only about 5 maps in rotation
real admins who will kick assholes, not nubs

We're gonna fill this bitch up every night. Bring your balls, leave your pussy at home. Talk is cheap, game on!

I hope none of ya take offense to this, but I actually really enjoyed this mod. The sad thing is what drove me away from it was the players. I will admit I am a major n00b and may never have the skills some people have. All I ever got was harassment and ridicule and not once did any one offer to teach me some of the finer points of the game.

I plan on picking up UT2k4 tomorrow and I am sure I will give this mod a try again. I am hoping that with some of the bot support in the new beta I can at least attempt to hone some skills before hitting any server (though bots are never like playing humans). If anyone knows of any good tutorials please let me know. It sucks to really like a game but constantly be run out of it simply because you are so frickin' far behind the curve of the players.

I assume you're american? The reason I say that is because the american community has been closed for a long time to new players, basically because most of the players play at a (very) high level and have done for a long time, and know each other inside out. It's much harder to break into that community, whereas the euro community are a wider range of abilities, since there's been a (small, but fairly constant) influx of newbies to it. And euro pubs are more accepting (as they aren't all VO). I'm hoping that 2k4 will bring more people to DB, in fact several people are working on a friendlier version of my original tutorial with less words and more pictures :)

and it's only as handful of peopel fromthe NA community that drives the newbies away.

most of us are very helpful.. but all it takes abotu 10 really rude people to give everyone a bad rep.

10? That many? More like 1 is all it takes to give a rookie a bad impression..
