Release: DB-Dawn (Beta)

Post by sycology »

Release: DB-Dawn

After the preview shots I gave you last friday, here's now the first beta of my first map DB-Dawn! The map became a bit smaller than I thought, but I think at least a 4on4 should be possible (Maybe a 5on5 aswell - but somebody should test that before).

It was a lot of work, so I really hope you guys like it!
And watch out for the "Deathwood Hills" ;) (You'll see what I mean)

So head over to pcgamemods.com, play it and say what you think..

Screenshots & Download

PS: If you like the map please add a comment and / or give it a good rating..

You should include "beta" in the title of beta maps. It avoids a lot of problems later.

:O

It definately is small, no way for 5v5. I would say 3v3 or 2v2 with space. It would be better if it was league size I think, but apart from the size it is very nice :)

Thx.. I thought the size would be okay, but later when I compared it to Cube it was very small... 3on3 matches should be possible I think..

feels totally unfinished to me
some things:
-grass texture on that outer ring looks wrong there
-looks weird how the outer ring is cutting thru these lamps
-lots of greenings
-texture on ceiling totally overstretched
-curved wall can hardly be used gameplay wise

overally, it looks like it could be good but it just feels so unfinished and unpolished

dunno whoever voted "godlike"...
my gods build other maps ;)

I think the idea behind the map is very good, just a little lacking in the execution. With a bit more time this could be a very high quality work.

First off, it's just too small, you can volley from the spawn to the back on the net in ~0.6 seconds. Way too low, even for 2 / 3 per team.

The pbox areas are oddly shaped. While the distance from the edge parallel to the goal is fine, the sides seem much too close in. You can jump in on the side from the raised level, charge, release and you will be unstoppable.

Aside from that, just a couple of minor things. The texture on the curved walls should not be grass. Perhaps some kind of mud, dirt or rock? And even if you stick with grass there, make sure the textures align ;)

-You also need to raise the walls in the area around the outer level. The ball shouldn't be able to leave the field if it gets shot up there.

-There are what look like curved lights around the ring. Either make them throw out light, or don't have them there. They just look out of place.

-Ambient sound wouldn't go amiss.

oh and everything DavidM said as well. :D

I really think this has a lot of potential, but if these flaws are not fixed, it will really kill what could be been a great map. Looking forward to the next release :)

kk.. but as I already said: It's still just a beta..

I decided to fix some things, but it'll take some time, but here are the changes I'll make:

- Add Ambient Sounds
- Change Size (Probably 160% of the actual size)
- Add mud texture to the side curve
- Redo some of the static meshes (lights)
- Redo most of the textures
- Change pboxes (Round Shape?!)
- Tweak lights on curves
- Tweak lightening overall

Maybe some more things - We'll see..

PS: What about the brightness / FPS?

Change list looks good to me

Try not to over-do the ambient sounds. In some maps they are too loud, or inappropriate for the map theme. But done properly they can really create a mood.

Round shaped pboxes would work nicely. Just as long as you are the same distance from the goal no matter where you are on the edge.

Framerate-wise the map was fine. Was getting 100+ fps running 1024*768 on holy-shit mode. But others may disagree. I mean, I get decent framerate on DB-November...

Eeeeek! I made a concept with just a few details and a size of about 160% and I have to say the gameplay sucks on this size - I really can't imagine that anybody would use the curved sides so I think I'll just change the size to 120% (A bit longer then Smallcube, but a lot wider) I makes no sense to resize it to 160% cuz the gameplay would be weird..

But I'll tweak the other things I've written

All the static mesh's had textures that were not aligned and/or sized correctly. The meshes would look much better if the textures were aligned and sized correctly. The roof is the default editor texture. It would look much better a different texture aligned and sized correctly.

The grass side walls look funny. A stone wall with the earth behind it would look more natural. Make a wall holding the dirt back for those side things.

The terrain is all one texture. Add some more for better looks.

I could get up on things over the goals. Need to prevent this or it will be abused.

The map concept is fine. Could look really good with some work.
