Meaning you can only take one measurement. So it shows the measurement for a moment, then shuts off. You should only need to make one measurement to figure out which bag has the 1.001g marbles. @jooly, I don't know about you, but I can't pick up a bag and tell if there's a 0.1g difference in mass :P

Yeah, a single door.
There are no windows -_- That's why you are TRAPPED in the room and not just sitting there trying to decide whether you feel like climbing out the window.

Okay, here's one. You're trapped in a room. The room has a single door with a weight scale wired to it. Sitting near the middle of the room is another weight scale. Both scales are high-precision and will work only once and long enough for a single measurement. There are 51 bags in the room. 1 bag ...

Flip one switch. Wait a while. Turn it off.
Flip another switch.
Go into the next room.
The bulb that is on is the second switch.
The bulb that is off, but warm is the first switch.
The bulb that is off, but cold is the third switch.

Oh, duh, I tried the first but only did it the first way around (ignored the vice versa)

I don't know what 6-sided means... I'm trying something, regardless
edit: nevermind, I think I know what you mean by 6-sided, and I think that was what I had in mind.

Hm... well, before I start wandering off on tangents, let's get the basics out of the way: It's a 3 digit number, with E1, EF, EI being the three digits, right?

169 seems too easy but I'll guess that for starters anyway.

Yay Nicky!

Are any of you in university in the states? If so, keep an eye out to see if Microsoft hosts an puzzle competitions there. They've had one here at umich for the past 2 years. Lots of fun and prizes too :D and people on here would probably do pretty well.

@nickspoon: They won't kill themselves immediately at midnight. If there were ONE blue-eyed person, he would kill himself at midnight. There are two... and each sees one blue-eyed person. What do the blue-eyed people expect the other blue-eyed person to do? When he doesn't, what new knowledge have ...

@Nicky: Broken elevator? (damn, beaten)

@nickspoon: Well, they know how many OTHER people have blue eyes or brown eyes, and that's all they need to know.

Do the case for only 2 blue-eyed people and you should start to see what happens for the generalized case of N blue-eyed people

Everyone does know each other's eye colour, so they DO know how many people have blue eyes. You were right about the one blue-eyed person case. He realizes it must be him, because everyone else has brown eyes, and kills himself. What if there were two blue-eyed people? @Nicky: I see "elevator" but I ...
